Mary Hanlon does a great job making you reflect about others life. In this realistic fiction book you go through different emotions, it also makes you reflect about others life.
What would you do if your world suddenly fell apart? If your past was humiliating, would you wear a mask to hide you identity or face who you are?
Stephanie is a lonely girl; her mother abuses of her while she’s drunk and her father is worthless. But suddenly, one day, she leaves, her mother leaves, the one who promises she wont leave because her husband will become president of the United States of America, the one who makes up stories about living in the white house leaves. Stephanie was left alone, her father went into depression while she had to move to a perfect household and pretend she likes it there. There, she makes up stories to fit in about how beautiful her life was and how much fun she had there, in her hell.
She is trapped in her world of lies, nowhere to be found. Even Andrew, the boy she thought was the only one she could trust betrayed her. She feels as if everyone leaves her, her world was left meaningless.
While reading this book, I found it quite interesting since you understand how hard is life for someone that has an alcoholic parent. Stephanie suffered a lot through life; she was a left out in school and preferred being alone and eating in the library than with society. In her house, when her parents came home from a party she hid in the closet for protection, she feared getting hurt.
In my opinion, I recommend this book to every teenager, so they learn the lesson that every life has a meaning to it and everyone is not how they apparently look. There is a truth behind every happy face.
I am looking forward to reading her new book The Comedown Life coming out next spring.
