The Double Life
Who will be the red queen? Who will be the white queen? Who will be the deck of cards? But most of all: Who will be Alice? That’s what went through everybody’s head when they auditioned for the play. But the one, who wanted the part of “Alice” the most, Phoebe, got it. This is a movie like no other.
A wonderland is imagined by a 9-year-old girl, Phoebe Lichten (Elle Fanning). Escaping to wonderland is not unusual to Phoebe since her mother is writing a dissertation on The Looking Glass. I believe Phoebe goes to this place to feel closer to her mom and to forget about her problems once in a while.
Phoebe is not like any other kid in her class because she suffers from tourette syndrome. This makes her life harder and her only way of escaping it is through the wonderland in her mind and then in the play. The only person, who understands her, is her drama teacher, Mrs. Dodger (Patricia Clarkson) because she too is different from what society views as “normal”. Her mom (Felicity Huffman) tries to believe she is all right, her sister (Bailee Madison) believes all the attention goes t Phoebe, and her father (Bill Pullman) thinks she is hard to handle.
Phoebe in Wonderland definitely includes many trips that take you to wonderland. She ran with the red queen in her backyard, she saw Alice when she signed up for the play, and she fell of the skywalk believing she was jumping in wonderland. I really liked that this movie showed how difficult it’s for a girl her age to overcome this syndrome. She spat the boy in her class when they accused her for killing their class pet and repeats things involuntarily.
From wonderland, to family problems, to the suffering of tourette syndrome, there is nothing about this film I don’t like. I recommend this movie to everyone that liked the movie Alice in Wonderland.
